"The Age of Anxiety" – Bernstein's 2nd Symphony from the late 1940s could hardly be more topical. Two choral-orchestral works radiate confidence: Stravinsky's striking "Psalm Symphony" and Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms," which oscillate between rhythmic drive and cantilenas.

Stravinsky's "Petrushka" immerses us in a vibrant fairground atmosphere where the puppet, Petrushka, comes alive. Baudelaire's poetry inspired Dutilleux's cello concerto "Tout un monde lointain," a work full of color, melancholy, and sensuality, transporting us to a mysterious world.

de Frumerie and Stravinsky

Sun, Feb 2, 2025, 15:00
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Emma Agnas de Frumerie (Violin), Kajsa William-Olsson (Cello), Johan Fransén (Clarinet), Bengt Forsberg (Piano)
Bengt Forsberg travels around the world, particularly as a sought-after chamber musician and sensitive interpreter of romantic piano music. He is also a regular guest at the Konserthuset, where he performs with a trio consisting of clarinet, violin, and cello from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Together, they present fantastic but also unusual music, such as the piano trio by French composer Charlotte Sohy (1887–1955). She lived during the "La belle époque," strongly associated with Paris, where she was born. Her extensive production includes a symphony and several orchestral works, an opera, a lyrical drama, masses, songs, piano pieces, and other chamber music – including this sparkling piano trio. Also rare on the repertoire is the Austrian composer Walter Rabl. He stopped composing in his thirties to focus on conducting and coaching singers – which is regrettable because this attractive piano quartet, reminiscent of Brahms, contains sweeping romanticism and inviting melodies. As a fine contrast, we hear Stravinsky's entertaining Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet. The concert opens with music by Gunnar de Frumerie, who, along with Lars-Erik Larsson and Dag Wirén, is usually described as a neoclassicist. As we can hear in the sonata for cello and piano, he was also a romantic and influenced by the Baroque as well. Emma de Frumerie, from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, who participates as a violinist, is the great-niece of Gunnar de Frumerie.

Collon & Kuusisto

Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 20:00
Nicholas Collon (Conductor), Pekka Kuusisto (Violin), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
»The work of a crazy man.« »A thing made by idiots.« Wild comments for Stravinsky after his ‘Rite of Spring’ premiered in Paris in 1913. People jeered and hissed in the stalls; nothing more could be heard of the music. Respectable listeners clobbered each other. The police reported that 27 people were injured at the »massacre« (Debussy) and Jean Cocteau, who was in attendance, noted that »a countess’s diadem was askew«. What was once a shocker transformed into a classic of modernism. What better recommendation could there be?

Orchestre de Paris / Wiener Singverein / Klaus Mäkelä

Tue, Feb 25, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Orchestre de Paris – Philharmonie, Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien, Klaus Mäkelä (Conductor)
The Orchestre de Paris and its music director Klaus Mäkelä bring the flair of early 20th century Paris to Hamburg. They explore the tension between Impressionism and Modernism with works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky. Debussy and Ravel are the figureheads of musical Impressionist music – their works are marked by ingenious orchestration and shimmering tone colour. Debussy found inspiration for his »Nocturnes«, in which the Vienna Singverein makes an appearance, in Impressionist painting. Ravel, on the other hand, combined Baroque dances with his own style in »Le tombeau de Couperin«. »Le sacre du printemps» triggered one of the most famous performance scandals in music history. The time was not yet ripe for Stravinsky’s pounding rhythms and sharp sounds, which he used to depict a pagan sacrificial ritual. Today »The Rite of Spring« is one of the most frequently performed works in the orchestral repertoire.

Orchestre de Paris / Klaus Mäkelä

Wed, Feb 26, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Orchestre de Paris – Philharmonie, Klaus Mäkelä (Conductor)
Klaus Mäkelä is a phenomenon. At the age of 28, the young Finn is already conducting the world’s great orchestras and has been working closely with the Orchestre de Paris for years. He has been Music Director of the top orchestra since 2021 – a time in which a very special relationship has developed between him and the musicians. The specially developed programmes are precisely tailored to the musical energy that Mäkelä and the Orchestre de Paris unleash together. For their concert in Hamburg, they will bring magnificent musical images by Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and Modest Mussorgsky to the Elbphilharmonie: fairytale-like and fantastic, timid and powerful – a programme that is not only made for the ears, but also for the inner eye.

Anna Geniushene / Piano Recital

Sat, Mar 1, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Anna Geniushene (Piano)
The NDR describes her as the »new star in the pianist sky« and in fact Anna Geniushene has already been attracting attention for several years. The long-standing American magazine »Musical America« selected her as the Young Artist of the Month in July 2022 and was particularly impressed by her »powerful sound« and her »musical personality«. Also, the young Russian landed in first place in major competitions, such as the Leeds Piano Competition, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition. The pianist is now a guest in the »Pianomania« series for the first time – with a varied programme fully in line with the theme of »Transcriptions«, which ranges from early Handel right up to the 20th century. In addition to two opera adaptations by Franz Liszt, you can also look forward to Fritz Kreisler’s bittersweet melodies »Liebesleid« and »Liebesfreud«, which none other than Sergei Rachmaninoff transposed from the violin to the piano. The six extremely solemn choral preludes from the quill of Johannes Brahms, which the Italian Ferruccio Busoni – perhaps the most ingenious arranger of the early modern period – arranged for the piano are in a completely different mood. Igor Stravinsky’s ballet fairy tale »The Firebird«, for which Italian pianist Guido Agosti created an extremely virtuoso piano arrangement from its flamboyant orchestral setting, is ultimately the brilliant conclusion.

Jakub Hrůša, Jan Bartoš

Sat, Mar 1, 2025, 20:00
Konzerthalle Bamberg, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal (Bamberg)
Jakub Hrůša (Conductor), Jan Bartoš (Piano)
Fascinating expedition: Thanks to Jakub Hrůša, we and our audience regularly get to enjoy gems from the rich treasure trove of Bohemian music repertoire. He loves to bring the stories to the stage that the composers from there have set to music so ingeniously. Smetana in particular was a master of symphonic poems, and in this programme we play no fewer than three of them. They were all composed decades before his famous cycle »Má vlast« and are far too rarely heard in Germany. Based on literature by Shakespeare, Schiller and Adam Oehlenschläger, they revolve around different characters: »Richard III«, »Wallenstein’s Camp« and »Haakon Jarl«. They were inspired around 1860 by an encounter with Franz Liszt – who once praised Smetana with the words: »Here you have the composer with the true Bohemian heart, the artist gifted by God.« To set the mood for these dazzling tone poems, we also present two richly nuanced works: firstly Stravinsky’s magnificent wind symphonies, in his words a »ceremony in which different groups meet in short litany-like dialogues«. Our Chief Conductor has chosen these pieces, first performed in 1921, because he loves the sound of our wind section so much – and is thus able to present them in a perfect light. There is also a work from the pen of the Czech modernist composer that Jakub Hrůša has long been fond of and therefore always wants to draw attention to: together with the accomplished pianist Jan Bartoš, we will perform Martinů's imaginative fifth and final piano concerto from 1958 – a charming example of the emotional power of his music.
